Ruined the Thread in My Crankshaft


While mounting the harmonic balancer, I destroyed the complete tread in my crank shaft (would you believe it?!!!). I rechecked a few times and it’s really gone over the whole length… Bolt is still intact. Yes, I used the bolt that is used to hold the balancer, I know this is wrong.

I’m now planning to tap new (larger) tread and heat the balancer for ease of mounting. Can I put the balancer in boiling water? (I don’t have an oven at the location of the car)

    Installl the balancer with a balancer tool. You can rent one at any auto parts store. Also put a little WD-40 on the two surfaces, and it should slide right on. NEVER put it on using the bolt!
